Water and Wastewater Systems serves as
the liaison to the local provider of public water and sewer services,
Orange Water and Sewer Authority (OWASA), and provides the engineering
management of the University’s water supply and wastewater collection
systems for the use and conservation of water.
UNC-CH has an active sustainability
program that addresses long term water conservation. Representatives
from various departments work together to evaluate progress and
identify new measures or local regulatory changes.
In 2004, UNC and OWASA started the
development of a water reclamation and reuse system to be completed at
the beginning of 2009. This system will make highly treated or
reclaimed water available for appropriate non-drinking water needs.
Initial use will be to support the water needs at the University’s
chilled water production facility. Future applications may include
additional uses at other campus facilities and for irrigation
purposes.
