Prior to any excavation, the following procedure must be followed to avoid potential personal injury to workers and the public or damage to facilities. Any individual, contractor or excavation company shall be held responsible for compliance with this procedure and for any and all damage that may occur associated with or subsequent to any excavation in the event such notification was not provided
1. Gather the following information regarding the proposed excavation site, as applicable. Nearest building name or street name, pavement or soil type, nearest cross street, area to be marked or where excavation is to be conducted, expected time for excavation to begin and contact name/number.
2. No less than 3 business days and no more than 10 business days prior to the excavation work, contact the following notification centers.
- State of North Carolina - North Carolina state law requires that anyone performing excavation to first call the statewide notification center’s number, 811. If you prefer to submit tickets online, go to the NC One Call website: www2.ncocc.org/ncocc/homepage.htm
- UNC-CH - The University requires that prior to the start of any excavation you must also call the Electric Distribution Systems center at 962-8394. Requests can not be submitted online.
3. After both contacts have been made, you must wait a minimum of 48 hours beginning the day after the initial contacts before starting the excavation to allow utilities to mark their underground facilities. The location markings for the UG facilities are valid for 10 working days from the date of the call to the notification centers.
